Just for a moment think about what would really hurt Julia Gillard. Would it be Rudd winning the ballot on Monday? Rudd resigning from parliament forcing a by-election in his seat eventually leading to the downfall of the government?
How about this? Taking himself and his supporters and forming a new party. Rudd has the public support and the charisma to be a strong third force in politics.
The fact is that the Labor Party is dying. For too long it has played to the factions. The public shares Rudd’s view that the party is controlled by faceless men. The interests of a few dictate how the government is ran.
No longer are the majority of workers union members, removing another support base of the ALP.
The ALP is so out of touch with the rest of Australia that it isn’t funny. They have no idea what the public want – much in the same way that Howard had no idea when he introduced Workchoices.
If Rudd were to break with the ALP and form his own party he could save the country from Gillard. He could walk into parliament and vote down this failure of a government.
Of course we know it won’t happen, Rudd lacks the scruples for such a visionary move.
